By designating 2011 the International Year of Chemistry the UN is hoping to increase the general public’s understanding for the significance of chemistry in today’s society. Because this year is the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie’s (1867-1934) Nobel Prize in chemistry, the International Year of Chemistry is highlighting in particular the contributions women have made to science and research.
The Polish Post and the Sweden Post are celebrating Polish-born Marie Curie in a joint issue.
Marzanna Dabrowska designed all of the stamps and Piotr Naszarkowski engraved them. Marie Curie is most known for her research into radioactivity, a term she coined herself. Her discovery, as well as her successful isolation of the element radium, revolutionized modern medicine and formed the foundation for radiation therapy.
The prize in chemistry that she received in 1911 was Marie Curie’s second Nobel Prize. She received her first in 1903 in physics together with her husband, Pierre Curie, and Henri Becquerel.
Engraver Piotr Naszarkowski, follower of master in engraving, Czeslaw Slania, incised a likeness of Marie Curie.
