The record Digging You Up, very much ahead of its time, would fit perfectly in today's alt/pop country climate, any fan of Dixie Chicks would find plenty to sink their teeth into with songs such as Drive, and Realize!
This CD is extremely rare and is a real treasure for alt country fans and regular country fans who dig Rosanne Cash, Kelly Willis, etc. Think Mazzy Star meets Emmylou Harris.
REVIEW: After Orphans and How Bee's Fly for the much-vaunted label Glitterhouse, Hazel Dine's major label debut shows a top-notch band in excellent form with a line-up that comprises Shawn Barton and Tonya Lamm (vocals and guitar), Jeffrey Richards (drums and guitar) and Anne Tkach (bass), Digging You Up was produced in Los Angeles by Jim Scott, that nice man who brought Whiskeytown's Stranger's Almanac to our Dansettes.
Where Scott's influence is most apparent is in the re-recordings of "Allergic To Love", "Apothecary", "Daddy" and Grant Lee Buffalo's "Fuzzy", which all appeared on How Bee's Fly. All Scott has done, basically, is clean them up, making them slicker and sharper, bringing out the tone and timbre of the vocals to much greater effect and thereby enabling the intricate melodies more room to grow and insinuate themselves. This is where Hazeldine come up trumps over many of their contemporaries: they can write- or they have ears for- the zinging tune that fairly rattles the grey matter. To that end, their take on Lee Hazlewood's "Summer Wine", which Hazlewood recorded with Nancy Sinatra, possesses all the warmth of a vat of Malmsey. Elsewhere, new songs such as "Pocket" and "Realize" show they have plenty more in the locker, confirming conclusively that Hazeldine have come up with one of the year's landmarks.
